No, Thomas Bennet foolishly convinced himself that his troubles were minor and would right themselves soon enough.

CHAPTER 14 Wickham was changing his plans as quickly as possible. First, he was thwarted from marrying Mary King, due to her uncle learning of one of the bar maids he had deflowered being with child. The lack of the ten thousand pounds he was to collect from marrying her slashed his plans.

Then the news was heard of the events at Longbourn. Lydia could not keep from laughing as she informed him of Mr Collins attacking her mother, of Mr Phillips impaling Mr Collins, and the other sisters running from home.

With Collins dead, there was no heir to the estate. And with the elder sisters having deserted the family, it would make sense that Lydia’s husband would be made heir to the estate. And if the child she carried was a boy, so much the better. Perhaps he could convince Mr Bennet of this being in the best interest of all, or Wickham would abandon Lydia and her child.

Mr Bennet was not pleased to be disturbed by Wickham, and when he learned of his youngest daughter’s indiscretion and loss of virtue, the man was furious for the first time in many years.

“How dare you treat my daughter with such disrespect? She is the daughter of a gentleman, not some common trollop. You will marry her

immediately, I insist on it. But you will not inherit Longbourn. It will go to my eldest, as it should.”

“Your eldest four daughters have fled from here, Mr Bennet. They will not be returning.” “How dare you speak so to me? My daughters are on their adventures at the moment, though I am sure they will be returning to our home soon enough. My eldest daughter or my second eldest will inherit, I have already informed my solicitor of this and he has drawn up the papers.”

“You, Mr Bennet, are a fool and it is time you realize that your elder daughters ran away from here, not wishing to contend with what was happening here. Your only remaining daughter is with child, conceived out of wedlock. You can protect her by making her husband your heir. Why would you turn this prospect away? Lydia is a silly, stupid girl. I will not marry her without an incentive. And the only incentive is if you make me your heir once I marry her.”

“You do not know my daughters; you have no right to say such things to me. My Jane and Lizzy will return, I know they will, so I will not give away the inheritance that should have been theirs all along to buy off a scoundrel who steals the virtue of my youngest daughter. Why should I reward you for your behavior?”

“Do you wish for your daughter to be ruined? I will not marry her without the inheritance or at least ten thousand pounds. From what I have learned of your situation, you do not have the funds.
